Finding Your Passion

By Treena, Career Advisor

A small percentage of the world’s population knows what their passion is from a very young age. We have all heard stories of the successful millionaire who knew at the age of three that what he or she was going to be. If it were only that easy for the rest of us! Oddly enough, sometimes your passion finds you. Consider the following questions and pay attention to any similarities that surface for you.

  • What hobbies or interests could you do 24 hours a day?
  • What jobs fascinate you?
  • What are you curious about?
  • What do you do when you are on vacation?
  • What have you done that makes you feel happy or proud?
  • Who are your friends? (eg. All outdoors enthusiasts?)
  • As a kid, when mom or dad used to call you in for supper six times in a row, what were you doing?
  • Is there one thing that you have always wanted to do but you talked yourself out of it? (Perhaps you could look at being involved in that activity in a new or different way.)
  • Have others encouraged or invited you to try something new because they think you might be good at it?

It is important to notice what catches your attention, from what magazines you buy to the types of movies you watch, because therein lies a true interest. Likewise, being willing to try new things can open up a wide variety of activities and interests that you may have never considered before.

As you begin new things, let your intuition guide you, and be sure to test the waters before you dive in. For example, lets say that you discover you have a passion for gardening. It would be wise to investigate the different careers associated with gardening and ensure there is a local demand for gardeners before committing to becoming one. If you would like to determine if your passion ‘fits’ in the Comox Valley, consider joining a club, talking to people in the careers which interest you, taking a course, volunteering, trying self-assessments, or speaking with a Career Advisor to determine your next steps.

Once you find your passion you will be determined to succeed and you will never look back. Here’s to looking onward and upward.
